What to Write in a Mother’s Day Card (Even If You’re Not Sure What to Say)
I’ve been a mum for a while now and as someone who spends her days writing words, I thought it might help to give you some thoughtful prompts for your Mother’s Day card this year.
Not all relationships with mums are simple, I get that. While many of us are lucky to have beautiful, kind, and caring mothers, that’s not everyone’s story. Sometimes you just need to write something respectful and warm, and get on with your day. I believe there’s almost always a kind word to be said, and some thread of love to hold onto.
So if you’re staring at a blank card and unsure where to start, try this simple structure:
1. Acknowledge the occasion
Start simply and directly:
-
“Dear Mum, Happy Mother’s Day”
-
“To my beautiful mum, Happy Mother’s Day”
2. Say something kind
This can be heartfelt or lighthearted, just choose something true:
-
“You are so beautiful to me, and I love spending time with you.”
-
“You make the most delicious food.”
-
“You are such a generous person.”
-
“You are so much fun—I love being around you.”
3. Follow it with a thank you
A little appreciation goes a long way:
-
“Thank you for encouraging me.”
-
“Thank you for helping us in the day to day.”
-
“Thank you for making such an attractive daughter/son (aka me).”
-
“Thank you for teaching me how to be a better mum.”
4. Add a moment of gratitude
Start with “I’m so grateful that...” and finish the sentence however you like:
-
“I’m so grateful that you always show up.”
-
“I’m so grateful for the way you love our kids.”
-
“I’m so grateful for your quiet strength.”
5. A wish for the year ahead
Close with a heartfelt wish for her:
-
“I hope this year is full of delicious food, big hugs, and laughter.”
-
“I hope today reminds you just how loved you are.”
6. Finish with a warm closing
This is a lovely spot to include your family, especially grandkids:
-
“With love from all of us - your kids and grandkids.”
-
“With the biggest hugs, we love you so much.”
-
“You are SO loved. Big hugs from ___.”
Whether you keep it simple or let the tears flow, the best card is one that feels real.
Big love to all the mums and mother-figures this year. You matter more than you know.
